I started making this natural shampoo after my elder daughter was born. The great results I experienced inspired me to share the recipe with you.

What you'll need:

  • Amla (rich in Vitamin C, E, and antioxidants)
  • Reetha (rich in Iron and known for its natural cleansing properties)
  • Shikakai (rich in vitamins A, C, D, E, and K)
  • Clove (promotes blood circulation and encourages hair growth)
  • Fenugreek (a rich source of iron and protein for healthy hair growth)
  • Regular or mild shampoo
  • Hand gloves
  • Metal pan
  • Empty shampoo bottle
  • Funnel
  • Strainer

About the ingredients:

  • Amla: This ingredient is a powerhouse of Vitamin C, E, and antioxidants. It helps stimulate hair growth, promotes healthy hair, and combats dandruff with its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Amla also controls sebum production, further preventing dandruff. You can find dried or powdered amla at most shopping malls or local markets.
  • Reetha: Rich in iron, reetha helps prevent hair loss and promotes healthy hair growth. It’s a natural plant-based foaming agent that creates a gentle lather without stripping your hair of its natural oils. Reetha’s antimicrobial properties also help prevent dandruff and other scalp infections.
  • Shikakai: This ingredient boasts vitamins A, C, D, E, and K. It helps promote hair growth, fight dandruff, and add shine to your hair. Shikakai’s natural cleansing properties remove dirt and excess oil without stripping the scalp. It also has natural dye properties and works as a gentle alternative to chemical hair dyes.
  • Clove: Clove promotes blood circulation and encourages hair growth. It’s rich in essential nutrients that nourish hair and support overall hair health. Clove’s natural color can also help cover grey hair and remove hair lice. Additionally, its antioxidant properties strengthen hair, remove dandruff, and prevent itchiness.
  • Fenugreek: A rich source of iron and protein, fenugreek nourishes hair and promotes healthy hair growth. The protein content helps strengthen hair roots and reduce hair loss. Fenugreek can be consumed internally and used externally for hair care.

  1. Dedicate a metal pan specifically for making this shampoo.
  2. Combine the measured amounts of Amla, Reetha, Shikakai, and Clove powder in the pan.
  3. Add enough water to completely submerge the powders. Then, add a little more water to allow for proper soaking.
  4. Cover the mixture and let it sit overnight.

  1. After breakfast (or whenever you prefer), put on hand gloves and mash the soaked mixture.
  2. Cook the mixture over low heat until the ingredients soften.
  3. Remove the pan from heat and let the mixture cool down completely.
  4. Once cool, stir the mixture again (wearing gloves).
  5. Strain the liquid into a bowl using a strainer.
  6. Add the regular or mild shampoo to the strained liquid and stir well.
  7. Transfer the finished shampoo to the empty bottle using a funnel.

Application:

  • If you prefer a lathering shampoo, you can add a small amount of regular shampoo to this mixture.
  • For those who prefer a completely natural option, you can apply the liquid directly to your hair roots and ends, similar to how you would apply hair oil.

Note: Since this shampoo is black and can stain, wear gloves when handling it and applying it to your hair.

Results and preservation:

  • This homemade shampoo has a luxurious fragrance (opinions may vary).
  • One large bottle of shampoo typically lasts 2-3 weeks with weekly use.
  • It’s best to store the shampoo at room temperature for up to a week. After a week, transfer it to the refrigerator for extended storage (up to 1 month).
  • Avoid using the shampoo for longer than a month. Make a fresh batch when needed.
